The Dolphin Shopping Centre in Poole is supporting a campaign to enhance the retail experience for people with disabilities and additional needs.
Visitors will find that the lights are dimmed across the centre and the music will be muted in the shopping mall in honour of the national Purple Tuesday initiative, which takes place on Tuesday, November 12. Inspiring poetry quotes will be displayed in the centre’s Eco Hub and a number of retailers within the centre will host their own disability-friendly events. These include:
Purple Tuesday aims to change the customer experience for people with disabilities by encouraging organisations of all sizes and from all sectors to take decisive, practical steps to meet the needs of disabled customers.
The event at the Dolphin Shopping Centre has been organised with the backing of its chosen charity for 2019, Diverse Abilities, which supports children and adults with profound physical and learning disabilities.
Daisy Roe, Corporate and Community Fundraiser for Diverse Abilities, said: “Purple Tuesday does an amazing job of highlighting the needs of disabled customers, who may find a typical shopping experience overwhelming. As well as raising vital funds for Dorset’s disabled community, we also strive to raise awareness about disabilities, so we are very proud to work with the Dolphin Shopping Centre on this initiative.”
Dolphin Shopping Centre has made a continued investment to ensure that the centre is accessible to everyone, including the management team undergoing dementia Friends’ training with care provider, Colten Care. Last year, the toilets were updated to modern state-of-the-art facilities which include fully-accessible Changing Places facilities with a ceiling track hoist and a height-adjustable, adult-sized changing bench.
The centre also has a dedicated customer service guest host, Caroline Taylor, who looks after customer welfare by advising on directions, answering any questions and signposting visitors to nearby amenities.
Lisa King, retail liaison manager at the Dolphin Shopping Centre, said: “We are proud to support Purple Tuesday as we are keen to do as much as we keen to ensure that the centre is open and accessible to everyone. We are proud to be in the heart of the community and we are keen to enable visitors to have a great experience every time they come to the centre.”
